Abstract
This report is a deliverable from a three-year research project addressing health risks for Swedish peace operations. The overall aim of the project is to support the Swedish Armed Forces (SwAF) in reducing the health risks for their deployed personnel. In order to do so, present and future health threats for current and potential future SwAF deployments need to be monitored and analysed. The report presents some examples from the ambition to create a global baseline for future medical and health threat analysis and strategic outlook. The areas covered in this report include a description of the global conflict and peace operation panorama, statistics on fatality rates from UN peace operations and morbidity from U.S. Army overseas operations, traffic hazards, trends in mental health and infectious disease prevalence. Lastly, it is intended to provide a discussion on implications from climate change, extreme weather events and natural disasters. The intention is that the global baseline eventually will cover all relevant health hazards covered by the SwAF Medical Intelligence framework, including infectious diseases, natural and climate related health hazards, traffic hazards, pollution (air, soil, water and noise), industrial health hazards, CBRN and hazards to mental health. By creating such a baseline, the capability to perform deeper analysis of various health hazards and threats, including the cumulative effect of threats, that one by one may not seem alarming, will be enforced. Moreover, the ability to early identify trends that may affect SwAF deployed troops will be strengthened, and will serve as an important tool not only for medical intelligence but also for indication and early warning.
