Abstract

This report describes the project Roam (Robust Radio Communications for Maritime International Operations) and the activities carried out during the first project year. The project aims to study communications solutions that provide high robustness against the dynamics that characterize the naval platforms in an international environment. Methods for effective utilization of Radio Spectrum, especially at HF, are of major concern in the project. This year's two major events are the workshop, which took place in autumn in Karlskrona, as well as the measurements of the interference environment carried out on HMS Carlskrona. The goal of the workshop is to create an annual forum for knowledge transfer and exchange of experience between the research activities and specific naval operational requirements for wireless communication solutions. FOI has received very positive feedback about the workshop from the participants. Firstly, for arranging the meeting and, secondly by being able to demonstrate the direct benefit of FOI research activities. The measurements are mainly intended to create direct benefit for the Navy and also to increase knowledge and understanding in the project group for: naval management methods and systems, differences between national and international operations, installation constraints, robustness of existing facilities and, finally, future opportunities.
