Abstract

Since a few years, the Swedish Armed Forces (SwAF) strive to implement model-based capability development (MBCD) in its force-generation and technology development processes. A cornerstone is enterprise architecture (EA), more specifically MODAF (the Ministry of Defence Architecture Framework). However, apart from MODAF, additional methods and tools are required to apply the MBCD approach in practice. To benefit from research, a project called M&S support for MBCD, funded by the Modeling and Simulation (M&S) research program of the SwAF, was initiated in 2011. Initially, the project conducted a series of interviews to identify needs related to MBCD within the SwAF. Among the needs identified were common frames of reference when utilizing MODAF within SwAF, means of analysis and simulation for architecture models, and quality assurance of models. The project also carried out an analysis of the state-of-the-art in MBCD. Based on these two analyses, the following areas are recommended for 2012 and 2013: ? development of MODAF profiles for automatic consistency check, ? analysis of models from technology and business perspectives to study the consequences of different decisions, ? development of simulation tools for what-if analysis and economic consequence simulations, and ? means of MODAF model quality assurance. For each area, prototypes to be presented in 2012 are planned. The aim of the project is that some of the results will be implemented and used in the real-world development process of the Swedish Armed Forces in the long run.
