Abstract
The issue with combat identification has been studied in an internal competence development project at FOI. The work is summarized in this report. Combat identification is an important but difficult capability to master in order to achieve efficient and safest possible warfare. Cooperative target recognition can be used to recognize own units. Particularly in urban areas with fast-paced combat in complex environments the soldier requires good support to take a decision whether to fight or not fight a possible target. A viewfinder with a clear indication, e.g. of an armed individual moving in an area with both blue and red forces, would give essential support for blue forces while minimizing the risk of friendly fire. The report describes various techniques for soldier-borne recognition and positioning. Robustness and vulnerability is discussed as well as the problem of authentication.
