Abstract

In order to model the effect of an underwater explosion on the large steel structures, dynamic and static material parameters are needed. The parameters are determined from several small scale laboratory tests. Such series of material tests have been performed on the material S355J2 which is a suitable material for ship structures. This material has been used in close proximity UNDEX tests at FOI, Grindsjön to validate the performance of several computer codes. The results indicate that the material, S355J2, holds a good overall quality. The test method used for the static experiments was designed to give true stress-strain data for very large deformations (up to rupture). The results from dynamic tests using an SHPB-device, showed a significant increase of strength for strain rates above 3000/s.
