This report describes how a radar sensor can complement an optical sensor in the surveillance of important objects such as camps, important infrastructure or embassies in an urban environment. A number of unique properties of the radar are discussed and explained in the report. Finally, a radar system meant to be used for surveillance of a military camp is presented. The analysis shows that a traditional system solution is not possible with fundamental radar parameters needed for the task, and hence a system based on either antenna array technique or MIMO-technique is proposed.
