Abstract

This report provides a summary of the work within the project Tools for information fusion and analysis during 2014, the second year out of three. The aim of the project is to build and transfer knowledge to the Swedish Armed Forces about possibilities and limitations with data driven intelligence analysis. In year one, a number of research needs at the Armed Forces were identified, leading to a focus for the project on assessing the trustworthiness of information on the Internet, with a special interest in deception. A theoretical work has been carried out to identify the various aspects of deception on Twitter and how such deception can be detected. In the spring of 2014, development of a platform for experimenting with new methods and techniques to support analysts with deception detection was initiated. The first step towards such a platform has been to implement and deploy a retrieval module for creating datasets to experiment with. Furthermore, two development tracks have been initiated, one focusing on visual analytics and one on data mining. As the developed tools have started to mature, analysts have been engaged to give feedback and suggestions at an early stage. The project shares finances and research activities with a number of EU and EDA projects. These projects contribute by helping to answer the research questions addressed within the project and provide extra leverage on invested funds. In 2014, the areas of collaboration included heterogeneous fusion, anonymisation, and risk assessment.
