Abstract
In this report we present a stochastic channel model, developed at FOI, aimed for wireless networks operating in rural terrains. The presented model accounts for distance dependent path loss and large scale fading. The large scale fading is assumed to follow a log-normal distribution and is therefore modelled using Gaussian processes. Since the channel model is to be used for simulations of mobile wireless networks, an important part of the model is the inclusion of the dynamics of a network over time. The dynamics of the network are modelled by use of correlation, describing both the dynamics of a link over time as well as the correlation between different links. The proposed channel model is verified by network simulations, comparing the results produced by the model with the results achieved using a more advanced, terrainbased model. The results show that the stochastic channel model describes both a hilly and a flat rural terrain with good agreement to the terrain-based channel model. The main benefits of using a stochastic model comes from decreased computational complexity and increased portability, as compared to a terrain-based model.
