Abstract
During 2013 to 2015 the project UnderWater Weapons Effect have improved the knowledge of effects from under water charges and, especially, the ability of predicting the effects from close proximity under water explosions, UNDEX. A numerical tool with the ability to predict the effects in small experiments including relevant physics is able to incorporate a full scale simulation. A large experimental series have been conducted facilitating the validation of a numerical tool. The experiments include measurement of several parameters as well as high speed films of the event. All relevant physics vital to a close proximity UNDEX is represented as for instance shock wave, cavitation, bubble dynamics, fluid-structure coupling, structural material properties. The series cover loads from different charge size as well as from different standoffs. By validating a numerical tool a full scale simulation is presented with much enhance trustworthiness. A small study was performed to characterize a typical WBIED and especially in the case of a surface charge. The results states that a WBIED might be described as a military explosive although with lower performance. Much of the validating experiments and simulations have been performed in a trilateral cooperation together with TNO, The Netherlands, and DRDC, Canada. Within the cooperation the experimental results is shared and results from simulations is presented in detail and possible explanations/improvements are discussed. Identified during such discussions is that numerical tools have been much improved during the last years
