Abstract

As technology development in certain areas goes very fast and the contribution of research is necessary, there is a need to highlight the research front for key technology areas as well as investigate methods for assessing the military capabilities that the technology is expected to provide in the future. The research and technology development project "Development of system capability" is a new project focusing on studying methods for tactics development, ie. tactics and combat capability in the future, coupled with technology and the human role in the system. In 2017, the project focused mainly on scanning the research horizon, for example through participation in RED-UAS (conference), where the majority of the presented scientific articles concerned automated navigation, UAS management and system optimization, participation in NATO group HFM-247 "Human-Autonomy Teaming: Supporting Dynamically Adjustable Collaboration" focusing on issues of co-operation between people and autonomous systems with the aim of increasing the efficiency of operations through flexible and robust "human-autonomy teams", participation in NATO Specialist Meeting on Autonomy from a Systems perspective as well as observing a Human-Autonomy Teaming Live Virtual & Constructive (LVC) experiment in Wales conducted by British Dstl (Defense Science and Technology Laboratory). In addition, the project has carried out a summary of relevant technology and research areas presented in this report. The purpose of Development of System Ability - Forecast is to provide a description and forecast of developments in selected key areas such as sensors, platforms, weapons and command and control based on what is being discussed in the research community. The forecast is a forward-looking summary of research on selected systems and technology areas and the role of the human in relation to these. The selected systems and technology areas are: Future aircraft systems (2045), Adaptive/Agile Systems, IR Sensors, Radar Systems, Laser and associated system capabilities in future flight applications, Future radar signatures and Human-Autonomy Teaming. This report will form the basis for the continued work on developing methods for evaluating system abilities (systems and systems of systems), the human role in relation to the system as well as the ability it provides the Swedish Armed Forces and/or the opponent.
