Abstract

A model for the flow-generated sound from a cylinder in cross flow is adapted from the literature. The derivation is reviewed in detail, and the assumptions for model validity are clearly stated. Expressions are presented which are suitable for application to underwater hydroacoustics, e.g. to estimate the flow-generated sound from wires and struts on underwater vehicles. Model application to cylinders with different cross-section, and inclination angle to the incoming flow, is discussed. The model is validated with recent aeroacoustic measurements.
