Abstract

This report aims at developing knowledge in support of the Swedish Armed Forces' ability to conduct operations in the cyber domain. The report is based on six research questions concerning (1) models of operations, (2) operational situation awareness, (3) effects of operations, (4) necessary resources for operations (5) education and training and (6) legal and ethical frameworks. As a first step towards answering the research questions, the report examines the academic research literature and formulates an initial research plan for the area. 631 academic English-language research articles are investigated which show a research area where the research questions can be divided into 21 sub-categories. Almost half of the articles have been written at universities and defence organisations in the United States. Among the universities, research is carried out in various departments, with one third at departments for cyber and information security or computer science. The research plan is based on the future needs the examined literature revealed with relevance for the Swedish Armed Forces and the research area, and the feasibility of meeting the needs.
