Abstract

A sensitivity study of parameters for small fragment generation behind armour plates and its effects on the vulnerability simulation results in a generic main battle tank (MBT) has been carried out in Aval. The purpose was to investigate if the conclusions that were previously drawn in the corresponding study [1] against a light armoured vehicle are valid when changing target. In the simulations, a MBT-target was fired on with a shaped charge warhead. For each simulation case, the number of fragments in the ejection cone was changed with the restriction of a constant total fragment mass. More fragments thus involves less mass, smaller sizes and lower penetration capacity of each individual fragment. All fragments were identical in the respective parameter set. The vulnerability of the MBT to the fragments demonstrated in many respects a similar response to that of the light armoured vehicle in the previous study [1]. However, for the MBT, lower probabilities of kill were obtained compared to the results from the previous study.
