Abstract

The main objective of the project Effects of Toxic Chemicals is to ensure available toxicological competence, primarily regarding tissue damaging chemicals, that could offer support in questions regarding health effects, medical care, triage and diagnostics in case of severe chemical incidents. The research involves studies of health effects after inhalation exposure to toxic gaseous or aerosolized chemicals or to chemicals bound onto small airborne particles and is mainly financed by the Swedish Ministry of Defence. This report summarizes the projects research between 2017-2019 regarding: i) Comparative studies of lung damages induced by chlorine, sulphur dioxide or ammonia in respect of biological mechanisms and medical treatment. ii) Exposure systems with precision cut lung slices and differentiated lung epithelial cells grown at air-liquid interface (ALI). iii) Model systems for studies of blood coagulation after exposure to small particles. iv) Health effects and drug delivery systems using small particles in research animals.
