Abstract

This report presents the outcome of a study on how the injury classification system Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) can be used for analyses in the vulnerability and lethality tool AVAL. AIS is an injury classification system for trauma, used for research and documentation of injuries in the fields of e.g. traffic safety and combat related injuries. AIS classifies injuries on a six level grading system. A combined analysis of all injuries sustained will result in a probability of survival using Injury Severity Score (ISS) or Anatomic Profile (AP). This work studied what type of information is available through the AIS codes. Furthermore, the result logs from Aval were adjusted to enable aggregation of results and some examples of how the results can be presented were developed. The results indicate that it would be valuable to use AIS for survivability analyses and that the implementation of AIS in AVAL makes it possible to analyse the needs for medical interventions after an attack on a facility. The current implementation of AIS in Aval is ready to be used. Future work includes grouping of the AIS codes in relevant categories as well as upgrading the AIS code to the latest version.
