Abstract
A literature survey was carried out in the project "HMI support for Gripen E", with the purpose of describing common methods for working with user experience - UX. The suitability of the methods for the design of fighter pilot human-machine interfaces is discussed in this report. The terms usability and UX are closely related. UX describes the needs and all experiences of the users in the course of time using a service or product, while usability involves aspects such as effectiveness and usefulness that in turn affect the user's total experience. The methods (about 35) described in this report are aimed at creating an understanding of the users, the context, needs and aiding the creation of possible design solutions, as well as evaluating design and interaction. A workshop was performed together with a few of Saab's HMI designers and developers in the Gripen E project. UX methods were presented and discussed. In general, the participants described the challenges for design work due to the long system lifespan. The UX methods that the participants use are mainly aimed at producing and evaluating design suggestions and system elements. The designers are in direct contact with the user representatives, and the main/preferred method is reoccurring user evaluations. It is important that the methods generate results that help the development move forward, and that it is possible to solve problems and make corrections based on the test results, in order to avoid frustration among the developers and designers. Not everything that is measurable is important, and not everything that is important can be measured. A combination of methods is needed to complete the picture of the users, their interaction and their response with regard to behaviour and opinions.
