Abstract

Current trends in the development of air-to-air missiles are towards increased range and speed, as well as better accuracy and precision. Such improvements have the potential to increase the flexibility of air-to-air combat, and may require changes to the way such combat is executed. This report constitutes a first step in acquiring the knowledge required in order to create the ability to assess air-to-air combat beyond visual range. This is done by identifying and structuring its basic components, with the purpose of concentrating future research efforts in the field. The focus of the analysis has been on picking out critical factors affecting beyond visual range air-to-air combat and defining measures of effectiveness suitable for assessment.
