Abstract

Decontamination can be a life-saving measure for victims exposed to hazardous chemicals, in particular for chemicals that cause local skin effects and for chemicals with dermal uptake producing systemic toxicity. In such events, skin decontamination is also important to avoid secondary contamination to the emergency personnel and surrounding environment. Skin decontamination can be performed using various dry or wet procedures and may include specific decontamination products. However, chemical exposures requiring specific decontamination procedures are rare, which means that generic procedures are usually adequate. Particular chemicals may, though, require specific skin decontamination procedures or products to reach sufficient efficacy. Decontamination of wounds, hair and eyes is also important in the management of chemically exposed individuals. This report describes the present scientific knowledge in skin decontamination, and current civilian and military skin decontamination strategies in selected countries and organizations. In addition, integration of skin decontamination in the medical chain is discussed. Finally, in the report we provide recommendations for the Swedish skin decontamination strategy based on the current state of knowledge. The recommendations are the following: 1. Identify chemicals with a skin contact risk and, thus, a requirement for decontamination 2. Update the Swedish decontamination strategy 3. Evaluate the need for specific decontamination products 4. Elucidate the integration of skin decontamination in the medical chain
