Abstract
This report, produced for the Swedish Center for Preventing Violent Extremism, is a preliminary study with two main objectives. Firstly, in light of existing research, to formulate what can be said about the intersection of violent Islamist extremism and honour-based violence and oppression. Secondly, to gauge the need for further research and what its focus should be. Understanding the relationship between the two phenomena may be important both in terms of a general understanding and as a platform for practical countermeasures. Nevertheless, empirical research is lacking. The analysis in this report is framed by an approach based on Social Construction Theory and Social Identity Theory, and its primary geographical focus is Sweden. An overview of extant research on the dominant violent Islamist tendency in Sweden, Jihadist Salafism, is followed by an overview of research on honour-based violence and oppression. Overall, clear theoretical and conceptual links emerge between the two phenomena, but also a general lack of empirical research on how these relationships are put into practice and manifest themselves in reality. The final chapter presents an inventory of research gaps and suggests directions for future research. In part, appropriate research questions relate to various aspects of the intersection between violent Islamist extremism and honour-based violence and oppression; in part they relate to a number of broader conceptual ambiguities as well as the analytical and practical consequences of a binary categorization of ideas as either "violent" or "non-violent."
