Abstract
The purpose of the report is to make sense of Russian thought on troop morale. What ideas about the concept of troop morale are expressed in texts by Russian military analysts? In the report, a simplified model based on the Russians' ideas on troop morale is presented. It is called the Russian model of troop morale. A key aspect is the role of Russian spirituality, dukhovnost, that is a unique feature of the model compared to western equivalents. On the other hand, the role of coercive power, in the model, corresponds well to concept of coercive power in Western military analysts' texts. The report also asks: What do these ideas mean in practice? A non-exhaustive empirical argument concludes that the Russian model is not entirely in touch with reality. This can cause problems for the Russian and Westerner alike. If applied, their highly ideologized Russian model impedes Russian appreciations of their own side's true strengths and weaknesses. But this can also lead to problems for the Western side, if military analyst uncritically accepts the Russian model of troop morale and believe it is more optimal for the Russian side than it actually is. There is a real risk that the model will be assumed to bolster Russia's deterrence capability, while in fact, it probably is not.
