Abstract

A potential future operating environment characterized by the sparse battlefield requires, among other things, increased mobility and a greater need for flexibility, not only in combat units but also from a C2 perspective. The project Virtual command post was assigned the objective to investigate whether virtual functionality could be introduced as a replacement or complement to today's C2 systems and C2 principles. The work comprised assessment of how technology in the field of eXtended Reality can be used for future C2. One ambition was to develop a concept demonstrator as a tool for identification of factors of relevance to virtual C2. The report contains a theoretical review of human capabilities in connection with virtual work, as well as a description of developed technology demonstrators and the results of a workshop on factors relevant to virtual meetings. At the workshop, implemented functionality and organization were identified as factors behind the effectiveness of a meeting. Much was mentioned that can be linked to technical realization of functions and the importance of how meetings are organized. In addition, a number of factors closely related to the individual experience of digital meetings per se and the technology used were identified. The fact that experience is personal means individual factors must be considered, including general attitudes towards the use of technology as well as ergonomics.
