Abstract

The Swedish Army and its manouver units need the ability to operate in new situations, perform new tasks and face new threats. New predictive methods able to assess future vehicle concepts are needed to meet these challenges.Tradespace exploration (TSE), where design spaces are constructed through the use of simulation frameworks and models, is one such method. Similar work has been done at FOI for naval design and has now been initiated for vehicle design within the Swedish Army's research and development programme - ground systems (FoT MS). This report descibes TSE, available tools, possible applications and an early developed framework with case study. The FOI-developed framework aims at identifying future trends, focus areas and vehicle configurations that support the formulation of earlystage national design directives needed for acquisition processes set within the global vehicle market. TSE studies can support army planning, acquisition, threat assessments and national supply-chain aspects analyses. Selected TSE-models enable detailed vehicle system analyses on weapon types and sizes, ammunition capacity, suspension systems aspects and the integration of new energy weapon systems. The internal framework and tool development requires time and resources but its broad applicability and potential justifies further development within the field.
