Abstract
Access to a reliable space domain awareness is an important part of maintaining the Swedish Armed Forces' freedom of action in the space domain. A large part of the military space domain awareness involves the characterization of satellites. The characterization aims to evaluate satellites' situation-dependent parameters, physical attributes and behaviour. It can provide a basis for qualified assessments of satellites' capabilities and, based on that, make a threat analysis against satellites or activities in other domains. The purpose of the report is to provide an overview of the methods that are currently used and developed for the characterization of satellites. Methods evaluated include radar, optical and laser systems as well as open information. Less established methods are also reviewed, for example downlink and fragment analysis. The results summarise which methods are suitable to use to measure different characterization parameters in a matrix form. This report should be seen as a summary and build-up of previous work within the research and development project in space situational awareness (Swe. FoT rymdlägesbild), and a direct successor to the report Inmätning av rymdobjekt - Rymdlägesbild med egen rådighet (2022). There are also plenty of references to other previous reports that can provide more information to the interested reader.
