Abstract

This report provides a comprehensive analysis and overview of energy carriers and technologies relevant to the Swedish Armed Forces. The goal has been to exhibit the great variety of possibilities that may contribute to a sustainable, robust and adaptable energy system for the Armed Forces, by the year 2045. The report describes development in each area and includes energy for propulsion of vehicles and platforms as well as for installations and power reserve. It explores system level technologies and concepts including local networks with islanding capabilities, electrification and V2X technology. Energy carriers for storage and propulsion, such as bio-based fuels, batteries and hydrogen are examined for their potential to contribute to a more sustainable energy system. The result shows a wide range of technologies that may become important in different applications within the Swedish Armed Forces' operations. It is our intention that this overview will form a knowledge base for further analyzes of applications in different sub-areas, but also analyzes of how sub-areas can work together within a future energy system.
