Abstract

This study examines the experiences of Swedish military personnel who participated in frequent international missions between 2011 and 2021. The study aimed to provide the Swedish Armed Forces with a basis for improving the work environment, to recognise personnel efforts by highlighting and making their experiences and opinions known and to increase understanding of service in these units. The objective was to identify both positive and negative aspects of belonging to a unit with frequent participation in international missions. Through semi-structured interviews with nine veterans, their motives, experiences and challenges were explored. Participants generally described their experiences in positive terms, focusing on personal development and meaningfulness. At the same time, challenges were identified, particularly regarding the balance between work and private life, as well as frictions when transitioning between mission activities and service at home. The study highlights the importance of flexible rotation times, individualized reintegration activities and improved long-term follow-up. Recommendations are given to improve working conditions and support for personnel in frequent international missions, which may be relevant for future missions within NATO cooperation.
