Abstract
FOI has been tasked by FMV to shed light on the state of knowledge regarding possible personal impact from lower pressure loads caused by the shock wave generated by a projectile leaving the muzzle of small firearms. Mainly, it is about how brain health is affected by recurring, repetitive low level blasts (LLB). Furthermore, the task includes proposing an experimental set-up to quantitatively measure such a pressure load in given geometries. The present report is part of two parallel published reports, where this contains a literature review of the state of knowledge regarding Blast Induced NeuroTrauma, BINT, from low pressure load. The most commonly proposed mechanisms of BINT are briefly reviewed, and the symptoms they cause. Effects of cumulative loading are discussed. Furthermore, proposed risk distances and use restrictions for commonly used small arms linked with BINT are presented. This report is then the basis for a proposal of a detailed experimental set-up, which is published separately.
