Abstract
The European Defence Fund (EDF) is an EU instrument for funding of research and development in defence. The purpose of this study is to account for the outcome of the 2023 application round for EDF, which for this round comprised an allocation of 1 153.1 million euros and 61 approved projects. Entities from France, Italy, Germany and Spain together account for half of the 919 participations and approximately 66 percent of allocated funds. Companies have received about 82 percent of the allocated funds and account for more than two-thirds of the participation. Swedish entities account for 38 participations and 41.7 million euros in allocated funds, which corresponds to 3.6 percent of total funds. For Sweden, too, companies account for the largest share of both participation and allocated funds. Swedish participation is spread across a relatively large number of topic areas, with a certain concentration in sensors, ground combat and underwater warfare. Sweden's allocated funds are concentrated in the topic areas of sensors and information superiority.
