The research area Space Systems conducts theoretical and experimental research and method development related to space situational awareness, satellites as platforms, satellite-based capabilities, access to space, and space as an operational environment. Furthermore, qualitative analysis is conducted regarding the development of the space domain.

The activities encompass a broad systems and domain perspective which, together with in-depth technical knowledge and interdisciplinary approaches, contributes to a unique ability to analyse space issues from a holistic perspective.

Within the research area, support is provided for the orientation and capability development of both civil and military defence. Expert support is also provided on defence, security and foreign policy issues in the space domain.

The research area constitutes a strategic knowledge centre for the main clients, the Swedish Armed Forces, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) and the Government Offices (Ministry of Defence and Ministry for Foreign Affairs), but also for other clients such as the Swedish National Space Board and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB).
