The following experts work within NOTS:
Bengt-Göran Bergstrand is a Senior Researcher in FOI’s Department of Security Policy and Strategic Studies, focusing on defense and economic developments in various countries. He has a Master of Business Administration from the Stockholm School of Economics, and has also studied at Stockholm University and the College of Europe in Bruges. Bengt-Göran has lately published compilations on the defense efforts of NATO as well as the Baltic States. He has also worked at SIPRI and for the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA), on how defense economic data can be used for arms control and disarmament.
Robert Dalsjö, Ph.D., is a Deputy Director of Studies in FOI’s Department of Strategy and Policy. He is a generalist in politico-military affairs, currently focusing on hard security in the Baltic Sea Region, A2/AD, European net assessment, and threshold response and deterrence. He has previously worked on Swedish and Nordic security policy, arms control, naval issues, international operations, and Sweden's role during the Cold War. Robert has also served at the Ministry of Defense and the Swedish NATO delegation. He is an active reserve officer in the Armed Forces.
Johan Engvall, Ph.D., is an Analyst in FOI’s Department for Security Policy and Strategic Studies, focusing on conventional arms control, security in the Baltic Sea region and domestic and foreign policy in the post-Soviet region. He is the author of several books, reports and articles on security, state-building and corruption in Central Asia. Johan has previously worked at Uppsala University, the Swedish Institute of International Affairs and has served as a consultant for the World Bank.
Pär Eriksson is a Deputy Research Director in FOI’s Department for Societal Security and Safety, with defense policy, total defense, international efforts and methods of experience management as the main focus. He has in recent years, among other things, led a government assignment on how the campaign in Afghanistan affected the Armed Forces and participated in a variety of studies on defense policy and total defense. At present Pär is working in a major research project on experience management.
Eva Hagström Frisell is a Deputy Research Director in FOI’s Department for Security Policy and Strategic Studies, with European security and international operations as her expert areas. She has recently published reports on Germany’s and Poland's security and defence policy. Eva has previously served as an analyst at the Ministry of Defence and as a Strategic Advisor to the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB).
Michael Johnson, Ph.D., is a Senior Researcher in FOI’s Department of Strategy and Policy with Interstate conflicts and non-military security threats as the main focus. He has recently published reports on Somalia, Nigeria and Syria, and contributed to a study on security and defence policy in Northern Europe. Michael has a doctorate in political science and has previously served as a consultant for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and as an operations analyst at the Swedish Defence Headquarters.
Madelene Lindström is a Senior Analyst in FOI’s Department for Security Policy and Strategic Studies with a special focus on NATO. Madelene also follows Norwegian foreign- and security policy. She has previously written about threshold response and deterrence as well as the EU's common security and defence policy. Madelene has also served as an analyst at the Swedish Defence Headquarters, as well as an analyst at the Ministry of Defence and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB). Madelene holds a master's degree in political science from Uppsala University.
Erik Nordstrand is a lecturer and Deputy Research Director in FOI’s Department for Capability Development, with games as an expert area. Erik works mainly with games as a method for analysis and study of problems and processes. Erik has written several manuals in the field, gives courses and organizes national game conferences in the defence area. Erik has also served as an operations analyst at the Swedish Defence Headquarters.
Krister Pallin is an Analyst in FOI’s Department of Strategy and Policy, with military doctrine, defence planning and command & control as his foremost areas of expertise. He has among other things long experience as an operations analyst within the Armed Forces and the Ministry of Defence. Krister has led several major projects within his expert areas and also held various management positions within FOI. He is an active reserve officer in the Armed Forces.
Niklas H. Rossbach, Ph.D., is a Senior Researcher in FOI’s Department of Security Policy and Strategic Studies, focusing on US and European security policy. He has, among other things, written about Brexit and the strategic consequences of the new US energy production policy. Niklas holds a PhD in history from the European University Institute on Anglo-American Relations and also conducted a postdoc on psychological defence at the Changing Character of War Center at Oxford University.
Anna Sundberg is a Deputy Research Director in FOI’s Department of Security Policy and Strategic Studies, focusing on the security and defence Policy of European states, especially France. Her latest reports are about Germany and Poland. Anna has previously written several reports on the EU and the common security and defence policy. She has also worked at the National Defence College and the French research institute Fondation pour la recherche stratégique and served as analyst at the Swedish Ministry of Defence.
Per Wikström, Ph.D., is a Researcher in FOI’s Department for CBRN Protection and Security, with biological weapons as an expert area. He is involved in threats and risk analyses regarding both biological and chemical substances. Per supports, among other things, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs as a technical expert in the export control regime of the Australia Group. In addition, he has more than 10 years of experience as a GIS expert and is consulted as such by a variety of FOI projects.
Mike Winnerstig, Ph.D., is a Deputy Research Director in FOI’s Department of Security Policy and Strategic Studies. His key expert areas are US foreign, security and defence Policy, NATO and other transatlantic security issues. In addition to writing a large number of reports and articles on these topics, he has also been studying the security problems of the Baltic Sea region, especially the Baltic countries' defence and security policies, since 2010. Mike has also served as an analyst at the Ministry of Defence.
