Abstract
In June 8 to 13, 2001, a field trip to Kosovo was made within the project "Case Study Kosovo". During the visit sampling of water, soil/sediment and food was performed. The aim with the sampling was twofold, namely to evaluate the possibilities to gain information from random sampling adn to support the Swedish Battalion by taking samples at their request. Random samplign of water and soil was performed in close vicinity to roads. Water sampling was carried out from off bridges and road dust was collected from the roadway. The contamination profile manifested was then compared with broader international environmental surveys carried out in Kosovo, the result being that FOI´s sampling of water and soil would confirm the same contamination profile. Sampling at SWEBAT´s requrest was performed with respect to food, wastewater, soil and road dust. The conclusion drawn from the investigation is that a model for systematic random sampling should be created early in the reconnaissance phase in order to achieve a rough opinion about the health risks linked to the contaminants present in a new "unknown" mission area. A crucial part of the model will be that of deciding where the sampling should be carried out and, too, which drainage areas or land areas the samples do in fact represent.
