In TDOA-based direction finding a signal is received by two synchronous spatially separated antennas. The two received signals are correlated and the TDOA-estimation can be done in time domain as well as in frequency domain. Simulations have been done to compare the two methods concerning estimation precision. The simulations shows that for narrow signal bandwidth estimation in frequency domain gives the best result. For great signal bandwidth the best estimation is done in time domain. The simulations also shows that the estimation result can be improved by averaging and by frequency domain filtering for time domain estimation or by direction filtering for frequency domain estimation. The estimation performance also depends on signal bandwidth, the estimation improves with increasing bandwidth. The estimation is also improved as the datalength grows.
