Abstract

In 1994, the defence related environmental research started at the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI), the Division of NBC Defence. Based on results from pilot studies commissioned by the Defence Material Administration, together with the needs of the Swedish Armed Forces, the importance of problem oriented defence related environmental research was pointed out. Initially, the focus was on the environmental fate of explosives. The above mentioned competence at FOI was formalized in the project Methods for environmental risk assessment of defence-specific chemicals: I. Explosives, which started in 1998 on commission by the Swedish Armed Forces. This report in brief presents the work performed in the project during the period 1998 to 2001, as well as the pilot research activities within the defence related environmental area initiated in 1994. The presentation is based on annual reports from FOI, published project reports, scientific papers, diary commissions and conference presentations. Spin-off acitivities such as teaching at universities, and supervising of theses for the master and doctoral degrees, are not included in the presentation.
