Sensor technology and communication in urban enviornments - one example

Military operations in urban terrain bring extra difficulties in maintaining communication. This report gives an example of a sensor system including the communication system that can contribute to the situation awareness during retreat, especially changes along the path when it is the same as the attack or patrol path. The system consists of one or several IR-sensors and a WiMAX communication system. A rough analysis is performed to examine the possibility, in the presented scenario, to achieve the necessary data rates. Some assumptions about the WiMAX system are presented and wave propagation calculations show that the necessary capacity is likely to be achieved.
