Abstract
This pilot-study of developments in the wider Arctic area has as its main purpose to make an inventory of the main factors and issues that Sweden will have to take into account in the coming years. The starting point of the analysis is the ongoing strategic change in the region. The perspective is, if not stated otherwise, within the next ten-year time span. The focus of the study is on the economic, territorial, military strategic and climatological factors, as well as the policies of the arctic nations. All of the factors studied here are under change and for this reason the region is difficul to analyse. Also, the elusive character of the Arctic makes it hard to predict how different factors may support or cancel each other out. This points to a need for further analysis to underpin further policy development. This applies in particular to the analysis of how the interests of the different actors can converge or diverge in different areas.
