Abstract

The present report describes a simplified method for qualitative risk assessment based on Swedish authorities' principles for the classification of hazardous substances. These principles has been implemented in the present model adapted to the needs of correct information on identifiable threats and risks before deployment of Swedish personnel into contaminated areas, nationally or internationally. The model builds on a compilation of qualitative (non-quantitative) information from relevant databases in four steps: threat analysis, effect analysis, exposure analysis, risk assessment. The result constitutes a professional qualified guess (=assessment) of the actual threat from substance depots and contaminants that Swedish personnel could encounter in the field. The methodology is intended for use before the deployment into contaminated areas. The purpose is to avoid dangerous exposures of personnel by identifying in advance hazardous objects or particularly hazardous zones. A follow-up of hazardous exposure in such areas can be carried out by different types of exposure monitoring, something which is discussed in a separate section.
