Abstract

QATEP (Quick Access Target Eye Pointer) is a project within the Swedish National Program for Aviation Research (Nationellt Flygforskningsprogram, NFFP), funded by VINNOVA (ref no 2009-01358). Within the QATEP project, the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) develops and evaluates, together with subcontractor MILSO and partner Smart Eye, the QATEP concept. This concept is based on the recent years' significant development progress made in the field of eye tracking. The purpose is to examine how the innovative QATEP solution can be used for target designation in fighter aircraft. The present report describes the completed pilot study, in which fundamental requirements regarding system performance and limitations have been analyzed. The report contains a technical description of tracking performance studies that have been performed at the Swedish Air Force Combat Simulation Center (FLSC). In addition, the report briefly describes the portable QATEP system demonstrator which has been developed within the project, and also describes the upcoming evaluation of the concept. Finally, some possible future technical development paths that may facilitate installation in actual aircraft are discussed.
