Abstract

Computers are increasingly an integrated part of the education where computer-based learning is used everywhere from grammar schools up to colleges and universities. Computer-based learning offers increased flexibility and improved cost-benefits that may be of interest to the Swedish Armed Forces. The purpose of this report is therefore to review the advantages and disadvantages of computer-based learning. The report also addresses the teacher's role, the students' responsibilities and how both teachers and students perceive computer-based learning. The report is primarily based on a literature review, but also a minor interview study. The results show that computer-based learning can be used in many different areas. Further, the students' learning is enhanced by the stimulation of several senses and the use of interactive scenarios and simulations. Computer-based learning also improves the communication between students and increases their involvement through a discussion forum, for example. The advantages of computer-based learning are flexibility, adaptability, fit of learning styles that are unsuitable for classroom learning, and that it provides dynamic environments that are time consuming and costly to recreate in reality. A disadvantage of computer-based learning may be that some students experience insecurity for the technology which can thwart the learning. Computer-based learning can be a powerful tool in education if used in the right way. However, even if the teacher's role changes to being more of a supervisor, the computer should not replace the teacher since the personal contact is still important.
