Abstract
The miniaturization of components such as sensors, electronics, guidance systems, actuators and warheads has now progressed so far that it is becoming possible to equip even small caliber projectiles (caliber = 20 mm) with components for active guidance of the projectile. Two different American development projects have the last few years made public some results from test shootings with guided small caliber projectiles. This technology may, if made generally available, radically change the usage of weapons on the battlefield. It will be possible to hit a difficult target with a single shot, something which significantly reduces the large amounts of ammunition required today to achieve effect with a high probability. This will reduce the costs, logistics, and risks attached to handling and storage of large amounts of ammunition. New possibilities can be seen in the use of guided small caliber projectiles in tactically complicated situations, as for example situations with (today) large risk for collateral damage on individuals and materiel, hostage situations, ability to disable specific components on a military platform to incapacitate it, etc.
