Abstract

In March 2014, peace activists conducted a protest outside the premises of the Inspection for Strategic Products (ISP). In parallel, Yes Men Sweden conducted an information campaign to highlight the issue of arms export, with the purpose to be published by media networks. Utilising fake material, written as if originated from ISP, disinformation was spread to multiple media companies. ISP´s telephone lines were blocked and the only number reachable was that to the "Head of the Agency", which was an imposter managed by the activists. With a central media agency, being deceived by this fake news strategy, the story was re-distributed by numerous other media outlets. The findings indicate that Yes Men Sweden used accurate facts about the protest outside ISP's premises and shaped them into a fake narrative stating that activists were inside the authority's premises. The influencing techniques of symbolic action, technical manipulation, disinformation and deceptive identities were used which caused the fake news to be reported by a credible news source with high reputation. This was the start of an information laundering effort and exploitation of vulnerabilities in the media system. The information influence campaign never led to any criminal or civil proceedings.
