Abstract

During the autumn of 2021, the Swedish Defence Research Agency conducted a preliminary study of military strategic communication in the cognitive information environment. The purpose of the study was to create an understanding of the area of strategic communication in the military domain [in the Swedish setting referred to as military strategic communication] within the context of the cognitive information environment. The survey consisted of a research and literature review and a workshop with researchers working in relevant fields. This report presents the results of this survey providing an overarching understanding of the terms military-strategic communication within the cognitive information environment. The report gives the following concluding suggestions for areas further of study: ? A deeper understanding of military strategic communication in peace, crisis as well as war. ? Military strategic communication in relation to communication for the total defence, including both military and civil defence. ? The legal framework surrounding military strategic communication as well as the information environment, from a Swedish perspective. ? Actors and channels of communication in the information environment, including the cognitive dimension, as well as tools for spreading of information and messages. ? The relation between humans, technology and society in relation to the information environment and the technological development.
