Abstract

This study examines how Swedish military veterans are treated in civilian hiring situations through a stated choice experiment. In the experiment, approximately 1,000 survey respondents first read a description of a fictional hiring situation. They were then tasked with repeatedly choosing between two hypothetical job applicants, some of whom were described as military veterans, to invite for a job interview. The results from the choice experiment show that international military service can be both an advantage and a disadvantage for a person seeking civilian employment, depending on the job in question and whom they encounter in the recruitment process. Women and individuals in professions requiring interpersonal and emotional interaction tend to reject military veterans. Men; individuals with their own experience of international service or veterans; and managers with personnel responsibilities, on the other hand, tend to prefer military veterans.
