Abstract

The global security situation and the war in Ukraine have increased demand for defence equipment, which in turn has led to an increased focus on the defence industry. NATO and the EU are implementing various initiatives to stimulate the defence industry's innovation and competitiveness and to increase production capacity. These changes can affect the market structure and lead to consequences for Sweden and the Swedish defence industry. The purpose of the study is to provide an overall picture of the competitiveness of Sweden and Swedish defence companies in the defence market. The study answers two questions: 1) what is the financial situation of the Swedish defence companies and 2) how well do Sweden and Swedish defence companies perform in the national and international defence market? The financial situation of Swedish defence companies is relatively good and Sweden performs well in the defence market both nationally and internationally. Exports have been particularly successful in certain product areas. In some respects, Sweden performs on par with some of the larger countries. In terms of total export volume, Sweden is a small player in the global defence market, but successful compared to other smaller countries such as Belgium, Norway and Finland.
