This study analyses how Swedish companies in the transportation sector perceive their role during situations of societal disturbances such as large electricity supply disruptions, fuel shortages or armed conflict. Through a survey with 70 companies and ten follow-up interviews, the study investigates how they would take on such challenges, including their possibilities to continue operations. The survey shows that companies aim to maintain operations during societal disruptions, even though this could entail making difficult priorities. In the case of mobilization or heightened alert, the answers are more uncertain but suggest that companies are more likely to adapt to the new situations rather than choosing to shut down. The interviews show that companies take into account both business considerations and a sense of social responsibility during crises. Overall, there seems to be a willingness to take on a role in the Swedish total defence. However, this needs to be developed further through dialogue between businesses and public sector actors. Business leaders already take measures towards improved security based on their perception of a more serious security situation in Europe. At the same time, questions remain as to expectations from authorities and the Swedish Armed Forces on the private sector in, for example, a situation of heightened alert.
