Abstract

During 2013, Sweden contributed militarily for the third time to the anti-piracy operation, Operation Atalanta, of the European Union Naval Force Somalia. This study describes the main experiences and lessons from the Swedish decision making process, as well as the preparations and achievements of the Swedish Armed Forces. A comparison is made with the previous Swedish naval contributions in 2009 and 2010 to assess whether Sweden's ability to contribute to international naval peace support operations has developed over time.
